Thank you for offering us the chance to meet your island as well as to share our questions and get responsible answers. I read a few things about the Achilion, the palace of Empress Sissy and really want to visit it.

Could you give me some further information?

A: Your e-mail made us really happy because this meets our aim: to have a great time visiting our island. As you already know, Corfu has a rare natural environment, beautiful beaches and very rich cultural heritage. As you have been studying information about the Achilion, let me tell you that this is the palace built by Elisabeth, Empress of Austria, in Gastouri village of the Achilion Borough.

It is the ornament of Corfu that nowadays is a museum. Sissy named the palace “Achilion”, in honor of the hero of the Trojan War, Achilles, who she admired very much. A main feature of the place is the numerous statues which symbolize figures of Greek mythology and decorate both the interior and exterior of the building.

In its interior, the colorful murals made by famous painters of that time are very impressive. It is the ceiling of the reception room where you will admire the fresco showing “the Four Seasons”, while dominating at the top of the staircase, the grandiose oil painting with the triumph of Achilles. The Achillion Place is famous for these wonderful gardens that are decorated with exotic flowers, palm trees and many age long trees. However, the most impressive attractions are the status. At the entrance to the palace you can see statues of Olympian Gods. The circumference of the 9 Musses is also highly impressive and of course the statues of the Empress’ favorite hero, Achilles, are an important part of the palace. The famous statue “the Death of Achilles” has a distinctive place in the garden. It was made by the German sculptor Herterin 1884, and shows wounded Achilles trying to pull the arrow from his heel. There is also the brazen statue of “Victorious Achilles” which is about 8 meters high and illustrates the Homeric hero imposing and ostentatious. It is really worth a visit to the Achillion when you come to our island and enjoy the famous place of the Empress Sissy.
