The mountain village of Avliotes, at the northwestern tip of the island of Corfu, was created at the end of the Paleolithic period. It is perched on a verdant hill, southwest of the area of Peroulades, three kilometres above the unique beach of Agios Stefanos and about forty kilometres from the city of Corfu. A characteristic element of the village is its two peaks, on each of which a church is positioned, one the Holy Taxiarches and the other the Panagia of the Hodegetria. From these apexes there is a vast, panoramic view of the sea and the Diapontia islands of Ereikousa, Othoni and Mathraki.

Tradition

Avliotes, the tradition

Another characteristic of the village is its tradition. It is well known to the locals not only for the great festivals that are organized there with orchestras that perform Corfiot traditional songs and with the participation of professional dancers in traditional costumes. There is also a Choir, the local Philharmonic Orchestra and the Avliotes Lending Library.

The library was founded in 1998 by a group of residents and has, during its years of operation, collected about 10,000 volumes with diverse content. It is located on the first floor of the Avlioton Cultural Centre. The objectives of the library are the dissemination of information and study of literature, the preservation and promotion of the special cultural identity of the Corfiot countryside and the general development of culture in the region.

Avliotes, the Carnival

Also of interest are the events during the Carnival season. The Carnival in this area is unique due to the combination of pagan elements with Venetian spirit.

The inhabitants of Avliotes are mainly employed in the tourism industry at surrounding seaside resorts, however a percentage of residents are involved in agricultural production and fishing
