Invitation for Tree Planting in Loutses, Municipality of North Corfu

The Environmental and Cultural Association of Corfu (ΑΧΕΠΑ) is actively working for the restoration of our island’s natural environment following the wildfires of last summer in the northern part. On Sunday, April 14, 2024, a large-scale reforestation effort will take place.

After continuous discussions with the officials of the Forestry Department, specifically Ms. Kritikou Zaira Aikaterini, the Forester, and Ms. Papaioannou Maria, the Forester, and repeated communications with the Mayor of North Corfu, Mr. Georgios Machimar, all bureaucratic procedures for reforestation have been completed. A 15-acre area has been designated for this purpose. Initially, 1000 trees will be planted in the area of “Anapafseis” in Loutses, contributing directly to the prevention of natural phenomena such as heavy rainfall. In the next reforestation period, an equal number of trees will be planted. The meeting invitation from the association to organizations, students, associations, and volunteers, both from North Corfu and from the entire island, is at 10:00 a.m. at the intersection of Perithias & Provincial Road of Kassiopi – Acharavi (Spiggos Pagotas). From there, everyone will move together to the area designated by the forestry department for this purpose.

The Environmental and Cultural Association of Corfu warmly thanks the Governor of the Hellenic Environmental and Cultural Association, Christos Karapiperis, who along with the Vice Governor and member of the Corfu section, Nikos Dimitropoulos, actively supported our efforts by providing most of the trees to be planted, as well as Konstantinos Mysialis, a member of the Varis-Voula-Vouliagmeni section.

Special thanks for their invaluable assistance to Mr. Efstathios Theodorakis, director of the Costa Botanica hotel unit, and the CRECOTEL Hotels & Resorts hotel group for their decisive contribution to our association’s action. Additionally, we thank the Mayor of North Corfu, Georgios Machimar, the deputy mayor, Theofanis Skembris, the head of the Forestry Department of Corfu, Maria Papaioannou, and the head of Civil Protection, Mr. Georgios Mavropoulos, for all their efforts in dealing with bureaucratic and technical issues.

We look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday, April 14, at 10:00 a.m. for the reforestation of our island.
