Christina Tzamala – “Intimate Views” Photography Exhibition

Does life bloom inside an empty seashell? What encounters might a journey scented with salt bring? How many surprises can the golden realm of sand or the opening of a forgotten door hold?

From the southern sand dunes to the flower-covered slopes of Mount Pantokrator, Christina Tzamala traces the Corfiot land with her lens. In winter, she walks through olive groves covered with nets while leaden clouds bring rain; in autumn, she searches for nature’s warmest palette in impassable fields and dew-soaked paths; in spring, she captures blooming hillsides; and in summer, she follows the waves crashing and carving into the stone.

Seventeen snapshots from these explorations of her beloved homeland, where her roots lie, are showcased by the photographer at Elpifos Gallery in Arillas, Corfu, from September 19, 2024.

“There are moments when I feel the need to shift from being busy, stressed, or caught in cycles of reflection and move toward more peaceful, receptive states of mind. One of my favorite ways to do this is to spend a few minutes observing details in nature, carefully looking at just one leaf or a stone,” she explains about her motivation for her explorations, and continues: “Nature reminds me to live in the moment and to appreciate the simplicity of life. It is a constant source of inspiration and healing.”

Sometimes, she ventures out on a photographic safari with a specific goal in mind. And even if the moment doesn’t bring the desired result, by later observing small details in her photos, she manages to keep her passion alive and gain a deeper appreciation for nature. “This discovery has made me understand that the best way to realize what surrounds you is to slow down and begin observing the details, and then you will realize a completely new world. You won’t regret it, provided you acknowledge that you are but a leaf, a tiny dot in nature’s palette, and with patience, you will unravel the ‘why’.”

Restless by nature, with a multifaceted personality, Christina Tzamala leaves a winding trace in life—from economics and public relations to folklore and artistic creation. She believes that “You don’t choose Corfu, Corfu chooses you,” and it was a conscious decision to make it her base whenever possible in a deliberate search for the minimal, that which ultimately opens the door to the intimate and essential: the encounter with oneself and the mother nature that gives us life.
