Dec 2024Under the title “My homeland is divided in two”, the two-day events of AHEPA Corfu will begin on December 4, 2024, marking the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
These events, under the auspices of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Greece and Cyprus, will kick off with the renowned performer Melina Aslanidou, who will collaborate with the Philharmonic Orchestra “Omonia” of Gastouri in a varied musical tribute featuring songs written for Cyprus, Cypriot songs, and works by great Cypriot composers such as Marios Tokas. The performance will also include the Municipal Choir of San Giacomo, the European Choir of the Corfu Music School, and the Children’s Choir of the 4th Gymnasium. This will take place on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at 8:00 PM at the Municipal Theatre of Corfu.
A range of talented individuals who have demonstrated their abilities over the years will collaborate for this demanding performance. The musical ensemble will be conducted by Spyridon Rallis, while the preparation of the Municipal Choir is led by Maestro Antoni Ivanof. Ellie Karydi and Periklis Papadopoulos will direct the Corfu Music School and the 4th Gymnasium choirs, respectively. The organization and artistic direction of the two-day event is by Nikolaos Dimitropoulos, Deputy Governor of AHEPA Greece and Doctor at the Ionian University.
This event concludes a series of activities that AHEPA began in January 2024 in Philadelphia, USA, and continued in several cities across America and Europe, aiming to raise awareness of the Turkish invasion, an issue that had seemingly not been given enough attention in political discussions. Key attendees will include Sabbas Tzivikos, Supreme President of AHEPA, Manolis Kountas, President of AHEPA Canada, Konstantinos Varsamis, Governor of Europe, and the Ambassador of Cyprus to Greece, Mr. Stavros Avgoustidis, who will address the event.
Entrance to the event is by invitation only. Interested individuals can obtain invitations from Café Saltino at 2 Georgiou Theotokis Street (next to Skiadopoulos Shoe Store) or from Courier Center in Koulines (former Speedex).
On the following day, December 5, 2024, at 6:30 PM, the highly acclaimed documentary VAROSHA – AMMOCHOSTOS: The Dead City will be screened for the first time in Corfu at the Reading Society. The documentary has received awards from Euronews in Europe and Fox in America. Additionally, Brigadier General Spyros Delli, a Corfiot officer who led a battalion of the Hellenic Force in Cyprus (ELDYK) during the invasion, will present rare photographic documents and a descriptive analysis of the tragic first hours of the Cyprus tragedy.
This event is open to the public, providing an opportunity to learn unknown details about these tragic events. On the same morning, AHEPA will also screen the documentary at the Municipal Theatre for all schools in Corfu, offering students a unique chance to gain insight into one of the most significant issues in modern Greek history.
