Exhibition: Evangelia Biza – Unfolding Exhibition Duration: 09/03/2024 – 01/09/2024 Ionian Bank Banknote Museum Agios Spyridon Square, 49100, Corfu Free Admission

The National Library of Greece (NLG), ALPHA BANK, and the Reading Society of Corfu present the bookbinding exhibition “Evangelia Biza – Unfolding” at the Ionian Bank Banknote Museum in Corfu. The three entities collaborate driven by their common interest in books as a source of knowledge and aesthetic enjoyment. This exhibition is dedicated to the work of Evangelia Biza (1963-2023), which, while formally classified in the field of artistic bookbinding, extends to the broader world of visual creativity.

Organized with great affection by people both inside and outside NLG who appreciate her work, some of whom apprenticed under her, Biza’s work in the late ’80s, shortly after completing her studies, strictly adheres to the technical and rules of classical bookbinding while incorporating the seeds that will develop and prevail in her later works.

Evangelia Biza’s work, which has rightfully drawn attention not only nationally but internationally, is characterized by diverse and sometimes conflicting assumptions. With a strong foundation in book preservation, a deep knowledge of the rules governing the art, and absolute respect for them, she combined these with ingenuity and innovation. She experimented with techniques, creating fully functional books with new structures, always working with the goal of achieving perfection in execution. Serving the classical while having a clear inclination towards modernism, she created a genuine and early-developed personal style without repeating herself over time.

The three entities co-organizing the exhibition honor an artist of international stature who took her first professional steps as the head of the Bookbinding and Conservation Workshop at the branch of the General State Archives in Corfu.

Brief Biography Evangelia Biza (1963-2023) was born in Athens. She studied at the School of Bookbinding Art of EOMMEX and completed further training at the Centro del Bel Libro in Switzerland. She worked as a bookbinder-conservator at the Historical Archive of Corfu (GAK Corfu), contributing to the creation of the Conservation and Bookbinding Workshop. In 2000, she returned to Athens and founded her own artistic bookbinding workshop on Kallidromiou Street. Many times, she presented her works in solo exhibitions, winning significant awards in international bookbinding competitions.
