The Corfu Antiquities Authority presents the commemorative exhibition “1923. The Greek-Italian Crisis and the Corfu Incident,” featuring archival documents from the collection of Spyros P. Gaoutsis. On August 31, 2023, it marks 100 years since the bombardment of the Corfu forts and the occupation of the island by the Italian fleet. The Corfu Incident, as referred to in international literature, was the inaugural event of Mussolini’s expansionist policy and a bad omen for the future.
The exhibition captures the events following the murder of the Italian demarcation commission for the Greek-Albanian borders on August 27, 1923. It includes the bombardment and occupation of Corfu by the Italian fleet for a month and the appeals of the Greek Government to the League of Nations and international organizations for the de-escalation of the crisis. Through a series of previously unpublished diplomatic documents and photographs, newspapers, proclamations, and engravings, it describes the rise of nationalism in Europe, the explosive political atmosphere of the time immediately after the Asia Minor catastrophe, the drama of refugees, and the aftermath of the Corfu Incident in the international diplomatic arena.
Exhibition Duration: August 28 – December 31, 2023 Opening Hours: Daily from 08:00 to 16:00 Opening Ceremony: Monday, August 28, 2023, at 20:00
