“Dimitris Kalantzis Quartet Presents ‘Modes & Moods’ – A Tribute to Mikis Theodorakis at People’s Garden on September 8, 2023”

The quartet led by Dimitris Kalantzis presents the performance “Modes & Moods,” featuring the music of Mikis Theodorakis, on Friday, September 8, 2023, at People’s Garden. Following the tremendous success of “Mano’s,” a jazz tribute to Manos Hadjidakis, a new jazz proposal and musical perspective emerges, this time with material by Mikis Theodorakis, performed by Dimitris Kalantzis’ quartet, along with some of the finest talents in the Greek jazz scene.

Mikis Theodorakis’s musical influences, as he himself stated, are rooted in Byzantine music, a genre characterized by musical modes and isocrates within a contemplative atmosphere. These elements are recognizable in various segments of jazz discography, particularly in what is defined as modal jazz. The reference to John Coltrane is evident and emphasized. Coltrane’s music, tropic, contemplative, subtly commanding, and possibly spiritual, serves as a clear influence.

The repertoire of this performance spans a significant period of Mikis Theodorakis’s compositional output, from “Little Cyclades” to “Axion Esti” and the soundtrack of Costas Gavras’s film “Z.” The lineup includes:
