On Easter Monday, April 29th, the musical ensemble of the “Philharmonic Society of Mandraki” holds its annual concert, in anticipation of the Holy Week. Time: 9:00 PM.

This year, the Concert by the “P.S. Mandraki” is dedicated to Mikis Theodorakis and Peace.

In the first part of the concert, the emblematic work of M. Theodorakis “Epitaph” will be performed, based on the poetry of Giannis Ritsos and the arrangement of Manos Hadjidakis. This piece, which revolutionized Greek music, combines elements of traditional mourning songs, Zakynthian serenades, Cretan roots, and church melodies, as stated by the composer himself. It will be performed by the vocalist Mr. Kostas Thomaidis.

In the second part of the concert, the work “Little Fugue in G minor” by J.S. Bach, arranged by Spyros Mavropoulos, will be played, one of the most famous pieces ever written.

Additionally, anti-war works will be heard:

    1. “Banja Luka” by Jan de Haan. A piece describing the experiences of the violent 5-year civil war in former Yugoslavia, which brought tremendous suffering to the residents of Banja Luka, conveying aggression, despair, but also hope for peace.
    2. “Festival Overture 1812” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. A piece depicting the French invasion of Russia under Napoleon Bonaparte and the Russian defense. It was first performed on August 20, 1882, under a tent near the unfinished Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, erected in memory of those who defended Russia during the French attack in 1812. The work is widely known for its grand finale with cannon volleys, church bells tolling, and brass fanfare.

The concert will be conducted by the Chief Conductor of the “P.S. Mandraki,” Mr. Socrates Anthi.

General admission will be €10. Tickets will be pre-sold starting from Monday, April 22, 2024, and every day (except Palm Sunday) at the “Philharmonic Society of Mandraki” building, Philharmonic Street No. 23, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, as well as on the day of the concert, 1 hour before its start at the Municipal Theater.
