Going down the road to beautiful Kalami, take the left fork which leads to one of the most scenic bays of Northeastern Corfu, that of Kouloura. A green horseshoe, it emerges through cypress trees and stands out with its highly picturesque fishing port, mainly filled with wooden boats.
We would suggest you park before reaching the end of the narrow road that essentially ends in the courtyard of one of the most beautiful chapels of the island, that of Agios Nikolaos (Petra). Sources state that on May 20, 1085 AD. an Italian ship carrying the holy relic of Agios Nikolaos to Italy, passing through the Corfu Strait, stopped in Kouloura, due to bad weather. In the church there are tombs of the previous owners of the mansion, old icons and frescoes. Going down the steps of the church one comes immediately to the picturesque harbour, where time seems to have stood still.
Kouloura, the famous mansion by the sea
Coloured small fishing boats and yachts grace the blue of the sea and the dense green of the cypresses surround the area. Fishermen with makeshift rods and fishing lines also fish around the harbour. Continuing the walk one arrives at one of the most famous and luxurious mansions in Corfu, a residence that is essentially adjacent to this natural harbour and the sea, Villa Anieli.
It is a Corfiot mansion built by the Venetians as a fortress against pirate raids and which has hosted blue-bloods and aristocrats of Europe for many years. The wider area of Kouloura was formerly owned by the Quartans (Kartanas), a noble family of Corfu, probably of Cretan origin. Their title of nobility, from the 15th century onwards, passed into the hands of the Gennata family, who originated from the house Gennata of Kephalonia.
In Kouloura there are no other houses or constructions near the coast with the exception of a fish taverna above the port. There is also a very small piece of beach at the end of the port on the far side which is completely unorganized.
In the verdant hills that surround the area, there are several luxury homes that are offered for rent during the summer months, as many, mostly affluent tourists, choose this type of accommodation, which offers seclusion and tranquility. Kouloura is a small paradise for those who love the unchanging and picturesque elements of this island.
