Pagoi is a traditional, beautiful village located on the northern slopes of Mount Istoni at an altitude of 170 meters. Charming cobbled streets, traditional ports dating back to the 18th century, churches, old baths, wells, antiquated cafes, simple farm houses with flowered courtyards and old mansions compose a scene from another era.
Pagoi is another picturesque village of the island that, according to sources, is found in a notarial document from 1469. During the Venetian occupation it was an administrative, commercial and economic centre. It has since produced very good wine for which it is still famous today and also produces many fruits.
Its name is misleading and of course has nothing to do with temperature. It is explained etymologically with the help of the ancient Greek language as the noun “ice, pax”, refers to any rocky hill or steep rock, something that is attributed to the morphology of the soil of the area, which consists of imposing rocks of large dimensions.
On the road before the entrance of the village Pagoi and nestled on the Kakoplagi hill is an impressive waterfall.
What is even more impressive, however, is the theoretic rock, the so-called Ortholithos, which rises up in front of it with a hole in the middle, like a natural monocular through which the waters of the waterfall can be seen, falling into the deep, wild gorge below.
For cinephiles, it is worth mentioning that at a crossroads in the centre of the village, where the roads are at a three metre elevation, a scene from the James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only" with Roger Moore was shot.
The serpentines in the Pagoi area were also used for the memorable car chase scene.
In the area the visitor can also enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramic landscapes of the island, the bay of Agios Georgios Pagon which is one of the most famous beaches of northwestern Corfu, the cape of Afionas and in the background the Diapontia islands.
