This dilemma prevails every summer in relation to the sea. Those who love pebble beaches believe that the sand, in addition to its annoying tendency to go everywhere and not come off towels, has the extra disadvantage of making the water cloudy with the slightest wave. They also believe that the colours, the beauty of the turquoise green, that reflect on the pebbles and the purity of the waters of these “wildest” beaches are elements that make them more impressive than the sandy beaches.

For those who are not convinced by theoretical arguments, we list five pebble beaches to test the superiority of the pebble in practice.

Barbati

A favourite beach for the local “pebble lovers” due to its relative proximity to the city centre, this large, busy beach is organized in most parts, with many beach bar and restaurant options and with endless views of the blue, with the Old Fortress of Corfu fading on the horizon.

It deepens sharply and despite the crowds, especially on weekends, the water is transparent.

Agni

This small, quiet, secluded pebble beach, comprises dense vegetation that reaches the sea and crystal clear waters that deepen sharply; all the characteristics of another small earthly paradise on the island.

It is considered one of the most famous ‘must visit’ places on Corfu especially for those who want to combine their love for pebble beaches, swim with good food and especially with fresh fish in the excellent traditional tavernas beside the sea.

Kalami

One of the most characteristic and beautiful pebble beaches of the island; the clear waters of Kalami reflect the green of the surrounding abundant pines and cypresses.

The pebble beach with authentic tavernas and restaurants, situated right on the beach, is ideal for those who love the tradition and tranquility of the area. The Durrells, chose the “White House” on the rocks, as their residence for these reasons.

Kerasia

Crystal blue-green waters, a verdant landscape profuse with trees and white pebbled beach compose an idyllic landscape for those who want to spend quiet moments in nature.

The sea deepens relatively steeply and its waters are always crystal clear. In one part there are umbrellas and sunbeds, there are water sports for the adventurous and above the coast there are two shops where one can enjoy food or beverages. Opposite, the coast of neighbouring Albania forms a lovely backdrop.

Avlaki

Turquoise waters and large pebbles reflect the sun creating a landscape bathed in light. One of the most characteristic and beloved pebble beaches in Corfu.

Winds usually prevail in the area, which makes the beach relatively “wild” and for this reason is a paradise for lovers of surfing and sailing. Even on the hottest days of summer, on the beach, there is always a pleasant cool breeze. On “calm” days one can also rent boats, pedal boats, canoes and paddle boards.
