Jan 2025“Report to Greco” by Nikos Kazantzakis at the Studio of the Municipal Theater of Corfu | January 12, 2025
I summon memory to remember…
“My entire soul is a cry, and all my work is a commentary on that cry. I summon memory to remember, gather my life from the air, stand as a soldier, and make my report to Greco, because he is molded from the same Cretan soil as I am and can understand me better than any fighter who lives or has lived.”
– Nikos Kazantzakis
“Report to Greco” is the final work of the great Greek author. A kind of spiritual autobiography, or as Kazantzakis himself describes it, a “report” in the military sense of the word, outlining his goals and efforts. It begins with his childhood and ends with the “Cretan gaze” and the conception of his Odyssey. It does not recount his entire life but highlights the milestones of his intellectual journey, without adhering to the strict chronological sequence of his real biography.
The performance stars Takis Chrysikakos, who portrays Nikos Kazantzakis and characters from his works, engaging in dialogues with the protagonists: Captain Michalis, Alexis Zorbas, Dominikos Theotokopoulos, and Homer’s Helen of Troy.
A production that, through the heroes of Kazantzakis’ works and his confessions (to his “grandfather,” as he calls El Greco), showcases the grandeur of Greece and the rebellious spirit of the author himself.
The performance series began in Crete, the birthplace of Nikos Kazantzakis, supported by the Region of Crete, receiving great enthusiasm and emotional response.
Following an invitation from the European Parliament’s Cultural Sector, the play was presented in Brussels, and a few years ago, its summer premiere took place in Heraklion at Kazantzakis’ grave with the support of the Municipality of Heraklion.
In collaboration with the Kazantzakis Editions, the performance continues its run across Greece and will tour universities and cities in Europe and America, under the auspices of the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Region of Crete, and the Kazantzakis Museum, honoring the work of the great author.
