    Speaker: Socrates Linardos

The Greek myth of Phaethon is just one of many ancient narratives that may be linked to catastrophic events caused by meteorite impacts.

What are the chances that humanity could witness such a disaster today? What tools do we have to detect potentially hazardous objects on a collision course with Earth, and how can we prevent such an event? Using the myth of Phaethon as a starting point, we will explore the greatest meteorite-induced catastrophe our planet has ever experienced—long before humans walked the Earth.

Moreover, this discussion will prompt us to consider whether today’s greatest threat does not come from the sky but from Earth itself—stemming from a form of life that shapes the fate of the ecosystem.

The event is free and open to the public, as are all activities organized by the Society.
