The Administrative Committee of the Corfu Reading Society presents a lecture by Mr. Raphael Moissis, Honorary President of the Foundation for Economic & Industrial Research, on the topic:

Climate Change, Energy, and High Costs.

The lecture will take place on Friday, October 18, 2024, at 8:00 p.m., at the Corfu Reading Society.

There will be a simultaneous online broadcast on the Reading Society’s YouTube channel: youtube.com/@CorfuReadingSociety

A few words about the topic:

It is well-documented that the energy sector has a strong impact on climate change, particularly through the production of greenhouse gas emissions. What was not initially appreciated is the reverse effect: energy production and consumption systems are heavily influenced by climate change. For example, on the supply side, weather changes affect the productivity of Renewable Energy Sources, while drought-related water shortages impact the operation of nuclear reactors. It is also clear that on the demand side, climate change affects heating and cooling needs as well as other areas of consumption. Therefore, the relationship between energy and climate change is not linear, as previously thought, but circular, and this must be taken into account in all energy planning approaches.

Brief biography of Mr. Raphael Moissis:

Although born in Thessaloniki, he identifies himself as a Romaniote Jew from Ioannina, a descendant of the legendary Davidson Efendi Levi, his maternal grandfather.

He spent his school years at Athens College and at the Jewish Whittingehame College in Brighton, England. He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering with First Class Honours from the University of Manchester and completed his studies at MIT, where he earned both a Master of Science and a Doctor of Science.

He began his professional career as an Adjunct Professor at the MIT School of Mechanical Engineering, and upon returning to Greece, he divided his career almost equally between the public and private sectors of the economy. In the public sector, he served as Deputy Governor of ETBA, Chairman of the Public Power Corporation (DEI), and Chairman successively of Attiko Metro, DEPA, and the National Energy Strategy Council. In the private sector, his most prominent position was Chairman of the Board of Directors at ALPHA BETA Vassilopoulos.

His social activities include founding the MIT Alumni Association in Greece and holding various positions on the Executive Committee of SEV, the Board of Directors of Athens College, IOBE, the Food Bank Foundation, ALBA School, College Year in Athens, and the Energy Committee of the Academy of Athens.

He has been declared an Honorary Citizen of the Community of Cheimonio, Evros, and an Honorary Member of the Jewish Community of Ioannina. He is also Honorary President of IOBE, College Year in Athens, and ALPHA BETA VASSILOPOULOS S.A. He has been awarded the Officier de la Légion d’Honneur of France and the Commandeur de l’Ordre de la Couronne of Belgium, the Golden Cross of the Greek Red Cross, the President’s Award from Athens College, and the Academy of Athens honored him with an award for his long-term contribution to Greece’s prosperity and progress.
