The Gallery of the Municipality of Central Corfu & Diapontian Islands presents the painting exhibition by Takis Metallinos titled “Corfu, Then and Now.” From October 11 to November 24, 2024, in the Temporary Exhibition Hall, the public has the opportunity to engage with the life of Corfu from the early 20th century to the present through a visual narrative journey.
Familiar places in the city and the countryside, scenes from daily life, and professions that no longer exist are depicted in the artist’s works, born from his ongoing desire to express his love for the place where he was born, lives, and works.
The exhibition features 60 works created using ink on paper, acrylic, watercolor, and pastel, with a chronological arrangement of the themes. For example, there are black-and-white ink works that transport us to the early 20th century, while others, with vibrant colors and techniques, take us to the 1960s and 1970s.
The exhibition curator, art historian Marina Papasotiriou, remarks:
“Metallinos’s gaze, filled with romance and idealization, moves from the past to the present, centered on the beauty of the place, a theme he has explored extensively from the past to the present. He depicts, as he himself says, eras he did not live through but would have liked to, when simplicity, tranquility, and beauty prevailed. These are the main characteristics of the works presented: nostalgic, tender, authentic, both from the past and present, and always beautiful.”
