Ionian Academy: Aspects of Its History and the Contribution of the Corfu Reading Society to Its Revival | Commemorative Exhibition

The commemorative exhibition primarily holds symbolic significance. It aims to honor the Ionian Academy and its founder, Lord Guilford, while also highlighting the historical ties between the Corfu Reading Society and the first higher education institution of the Hellenic world. Moreover, it showcases the Society’s coordinated efforts to establish (or re-establish) the Ionian University.

The exhibits, sourced exclusively from the Reading Society’s collections, shed light on Guilford’s efforts to promote Greek education and provide insights into the history of the Academy.

Additionally, representative documents are displayed, emphasizing the significant role of the Reading Society in achieving the re-establishment of a higher education institution in Corfu.

The Corfu Reading Society had developed close relations with the Ionian Academy since its founding in 1836. Many of its members were former Academy students, while others served as its professors. Notable examples include the Society’s first President, Petros Vrailas-Armenis, one of the most prominent Greek philosophers of the 19th century. Other significant figures, such as Andreas Kalvos, Athanasios Politis, Spyridon Arvanitakis, Konstantinos Asopios, Christoforos Filitas, Elias Politis, and others, enriched both institutions with their presence.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the Reading Society persistently pursued the goal of re-establishing the Ionian University. Through repeated publications in the local press, petitions to successive governments, and calls for support from other prominent cultural institutions, the Society continuously advocated for “rectifying an injustice.”

Two particularly noteworthy initiatives highlight this commitment:

    • In 1973, the Society organized a major exhibition in its premises titled IONIAN ACADEMY, 1823-1973, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Academy’s founding, aiming to foster momentum for the University’s revival.
    • In 1981, with financial support from the Presidency of the Republic and certain Greek shipping magnates, the Society acquired a significant portion of the Guilford Archive at a British auction house. This acquisition illuminated various aspects of the Academy’s history and Greek education in general. In 1984, the Society published the archive’s catalog, prepared by Daphne Kyriaki-Manesi, now a professor at the University of West Attica.

Even after the establishment of the Ionian University in 1984, the Reading Society has steadfastly supported the institution. This enduring partnership is evident in their excellent relations and numerous joint initiatives, such as the commemorative exhibition currently held at the Municipal Art Gallery of Corfu, co-organized with the Ionian University.

Most recently, in 2021, the Society completed the digitization of its entire Guilford Archive, thanks to a research project partially funded by the Ministry of Culture and under its auspices. The project was presented during the first commemorative event of the year on April 12, 2024. The event’s recording is available on the Society’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlcDsw8-26I.

The exhibition will run until May 30, 2025, and is open to visitors Monday to Friday, from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
