6 Oct 2024The Biennale of Paxos is an open and free contemporary art initiative featuring sculptures, installations, photographs, murals in public spaces, and theatrical performances. Its goal is to promote new, promising artists by providing them with an unparalleled environment to express their ideas and creativity.
This year’s event will feature artists from across Europe, all determined to enliven the landscape with artworks that will surprise, amaze, provoke thought, and perhaps even stimulate passersby. The artists will interact with the structures of the island’s predominantly outdoor natural and architectural points of interest. Ultimately, the artworks will be removed, leaving their impact only in the minds of the viewers.
Festival venues are spread across the island, with some visible from the sea. Access will be possible by car, boat, or on foot. Open events will take place throughout the summer. A detailed map of the festival locations and surroundings will be available on the event’s website and from a special booth in the center of Paxos. Access to the festival, held in nature and public spaces, will be free for all residents and visitors of the island.
The founder of the Paxos Biennale, Marina Tomacelli Filomarino (of Italian descent), has had a long-standing relationship with the island. Inspired by its beauty, she envisioned giving artists a platform to express their creativity in this unique environment. “Sculptures gain much more value in nature than in an art gallery,” she says, “and I also liked the idea of inspiring new feelings and emotions in beloved and familiar landscapes.” Motivated by her love for the island and the Ionian Sea, she aims to develop sustainable tourism on the island with the enthusiastic support of the local community and its summer residents.
