Jul 2024In her neighborhood, across from the iconic building of the Reading Society, commonly referred to as the “House of Vlahopoulou” from the film “Countess of Corfu,” where “the ground floor is there to support the upper,” the summer retreat of the Old Philharmonic Band of Corfu Scouts in Faliraki hosts their concerts in recent years. This unique hospitality is carefully arranged and organized by the Union of Old Scouts of the 1st Corfu System, celebrating the long-standing and warm relationship between these two significant cultural and educational entities. On Monday, July 22 at 21:15, they pay musical tribute to the great Corfiote actress and artist Rena Vlahopoulou. These children, these young musicians, are the ideal performers for this tribute evening, embodying Rena’s charisma, her local charm, and her Ionian spirit, which she carried throughout her life like a young girl of 17 singing “Reginella Campagnola” timidly to Mimis Traiforos. A tempestuous life filled with rapid tempi and alternating crescendi and diminuendi, a life that only musical terms can define, but also an unlimited love for her homeland, Corfu.
At this concert, follow the advice of the lady herself, Aggiolina: “Let me close my eyes and see Corfu beautiful, as it is,” and dream with us of the princess of the Ionian Sea with Paleokastritsa, Benitses, and Pontikonisi according to the beloved song, our unique and distinguished Corfu!
The evening is illuminated by the presence of distinguished artists and associations:
Elena Ristova performs the songs of Rena Vlahopoulou.
Dance and theatrical performances by the Lyceum of Greek Women of Corfu, curated by Liza Alexaki. Participating are the choral ensemble of the traditional section of the Lyceum of Greek Women of Corfu and the instrumental ensemble of the Corfu Serenade and Mandolinata, under the direction and preparation of Apostolos Valsamis.
Prose by Eva Mavroforou. Introduction by Evangelia Krokidi.
Musical direction, artistic supervision, transcriptions, and orchestrations by Spyros Prosoparis.
