“During the modern era, the creation of private collections is rooted in the particular interest of an individual regarding the artistic, historical, and generally cultural development of a place.”

CORFU. The Museological Collections of the Ionian University invite you to the event “Roundtable Discussion – Modern Historians and the Enrichment of Museological Collections” with speakers Spyros Gaoutsis, Researcher and Collector, and George Sourtzinos, Writer and Collector.

“During the modern era, the creation of private collections is rooted in the particular interest of an individual regarding the artistic, historical, and generally cultural development of a place. The rules followed for the formation, care, and promotion of the personal collection are those that characterize the curation of museum collections.”

The event will take place on Thursday, April 18th, at the Library and Information Center of the Ionian University at 19:00.

    Brief biographies of the speakers:

George Sourtzinos was born in 1943 in Corfu, where he completed his six-year Gymnasium education of the time. As a student, he had a special collecting interest in Corfiot engravings. Today, his collection includes 300 authentic engravings from 1486 to 1962 with Corfiot themes. This collection was the motivation for him to engage in research and write five books on local history and folklore.

Spyros Gaoutsis was born in Corfu in 1973 and works as a Archivist and Archival Officer at the Catholic Archdiocese of Corfu, Zakynthos & Cephalonia. With studies in French language, European cultural history, and art conservation, he is a member of various scientific and cultural associations. In 1999, he was elected the youngest member and the first Greek at the Pontifical Academy for the promotion and preservation of ecclesiastical artistic heritage. He serves as the Consul of the Republic of Malta in Corfu, and his research interests focus on the educational situation and ecclesiastical relations in the Ionian region, primarily in the 19th century. As a result of this activity, he has published five independent works and thirty or more publications, mainly in conference proceedings and yearbooks. A large part of his activity is devoted to enriching a personal collection of old editions, engravings, maps, photographs, medals, historical manuscripts, and relics related to Corfu’s history, some of which have been exhibited in museums, galleries, Ministry of Culture exhibitions, and the Greek Parliament.
