The Department of Foreign Languages, Translation, and Interpreting (DFLTI) of the Ionian University, in collaboration with the European Commission, is organizing the Translating Europe Workshop (TEW) titled “Human Translation and Artificial Intelligence: Challenges in Education and Impact on the Translation Profession” on Tuesday, October 8, 2024.

Workshop Theme:

Translation increasingly relies on technology. However, as Artificial Intelligence (AI) evolves at an unprecedented pace within the broader context of rapid technological development, translation is becoming more intertwined with AI. This brings changes not only to job positions and the skills required for translators to meet professional demands but also to the nature of translation itself. The workshop aims to explore the complex field of AI and its effects on professional translation and translator education, focusing on both theoretical and practical challenges posed by AI for professional translators.

Lynne Bowker: Full Professor and Canada Research Chair in Translation, Technologies and Society at Université Laval, Canada
Joss Moorkens: Associate Professor at the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies, Dublin City University (DCU)
Helena Moniz: President of the European Association for Machine Translation, President of the International Association for Machine Translation, Assistant Professor at the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon
Marcus Foti: Head of Sector, Responsible for IT projects in the language technology field, Directorate-General for Translation, European Commission
Ana Guerberof-Arenas: Associate Professor, University of Groningen
