Nov 2023200 Years Since the Composition of the “Hymn to Liberty”
Music Event
This year marks 200 years since the composition of the “Hymn to Liberty” in Zakynthos in 1823, a work by Dionysios Solomos, the first stanzas of which constitute the National Anthem of Greece and Cyprus.
In a joint initiative by the Philharmonic Society of Corfu and the Society of Corfiot Studies – Solomos Museum of Corfu, the 200 years since the composition of the “Hymn” are honored with a musical event that connects Zakynthos with Corfu.
Specifically, on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at the Municipal Theater of Corfu, two emblematic musical ensembles of the Ionian Islands, the “Singers of Zakynthos” and the band of the Old Philharmonic, collaborate under the artistic auspices of the Philharmonic Society of Corfu in a joint concert.
The concert will feature musical compositions based on Solomos’ poetry by musicians from Zakynthos and Corfu from the 19th and 20th centuries. The program consists of three parts: in the first, the band of the Old Philharmonic will perform instrumental compositions (original and arranged) related to the above theme. In the second, the famous “Singers of Zakynthos” will appear with musicalized Solomos poetry, and in the third, the two groups collaborate, always with a reference to Solomos and his works (all in arrangements by the chief musician Spyros Prosoparis).
The evening will conclude with extensive excerpts from the first musicalization of the “Hymn” by Nikolaos Chalkiopoulos-Mantzaro (1829-30), the first complete edition of which celebrates 150 years this year (London, 1873), giving a double anniversary character to the event. The concert on November 18, 2023, at the Municipal Theater, will start at 8:00 PM, and admission will be free.
