09:00 Procession of the Holy Relic of St. Spyridon and procession of the Epitaphios of the Church. The oldest procession of the Saint, commemorating the miraculous deliverance from famine, likely in 1553. All three philharmonic bands of the city participate.

11:00 After the procession, the Vespers of the Resurrection is celebrated at the Metropolitan Cathedral. When the Metropolitan chants “Arise, O God, judge the earth…” all the church bells ring joyfully, and people throw old clay pots from their balconies, symbolizing the “First Resurrection.”

This refers to the tradition of the “First Resurrection” with the throwing of “botides.” The roots of this custom are very old. Perhaps the noise from the breaking symbolizes the victory of life over death.

11:01 In the Pinia area, the tradition of “Mastela” is revived. A decorated barrel filled with water is placed, and passersby throw coins into it, making a wish. At the announcement of the First Resurrection, the first person to jump into the “Mastela” gets the coins and a soaking. Organized by the Corfiot Events Organization (OKE).

23:00 Start of the Resurrection Night Service at the Church of St. Paraskevi, near the Spianada Square.

23:40 Procession from the Church of St. Paraskevi to the Palko of the Spianada Square for the Resurrection ceremony, led by His Eminence Metropolitan Nektarios of Corfu. The Resurrection is celebrated, and “Christ is Risen” is sung, with all three philharmonic bands playing simultaneously in a spectacular atmosphere.

00:30 Easter Divine Liturgy is held in the night at various churches and monasteries.

Easter Sunday

09:00-11:00 In most churches in Corfu, the Resurrection Divine Liturgy is celebrated in the morning, following an old tradition, faithfully based on the Gospel passage “… early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb, the sun having risen”. Additionally, the icon of the Resurrection of the Lord is carried in procession, in accordance with Byzantine tradition, which is still observed in some Aegean islands and in Slavic Orthodox countries.
