Over the years, it has managed to create a widely recognized high-level event that stands proudly among the top mountain running races in Greece. Simultaneously, through the races, 80 km of trails have been highlighted, maintained, and marked, creating conditions for hiking and sports tourism in the wider area of the island.

Corfu Mountain Trail

The increasing popularity of mountain running in recent years, both in Greece and abroad, combined with the acquisition of sports and organizational experience by Corfiot runners regarding such events, gradually led to the realization of the idea of organizing a mountain running race on the island of Corfu.

The geomorphological characteristics, the diversity of the Corfiot natural environment, and the mild climate of the island during the winter months provided the conditions for both the organization of the Corfu Mountain Trail and the appeal the race aims to have at a national level, for now.

A group of long-time runners (Vasilis Alamanos, Prokopis Arkoudis, the “ever-runner” Giorgos Psailas, Giannis Aravantinos, Savvas Alekopoulos, Theodoros Biskos, Ira Vinou, Jean Paul Goutorbe, Nikos Fagogenis, Spyros Bouzis, Aristotelis Porfyris) processed, supported, and promoted the initial idea of organizing the 1st CORFUMOUNTAIN TRAIL so that it became a reality on February 5, 2012, with the organizational and sports support of the Associations they represent: CORFU VETERAN ATHLETES ASSOCIATION (SEVAS) “O VIKTOR” & APS RUNNERS OF CORFU “ARCHILOCHOS”.

The race routes, moreover, were more or less the training ground for Corfiot mountain athletes. Vasilis Alamanos, Jean Paul, Prokopis Arkoudis, and Spyros Ziniatis had their Sunday training sessions in this area of Central Corfu as part of their preparation for participation in a mountain race, either national or international.

The initial group soon expanded as more and more fellow athletes “tasted” the experience of running in the mountains, while the mountain of AGIOI DEKA (GALESION OROS) became the reference point for training, a place that offers the possibility of many alternative routes within the inland part of Central Corfu, where Mediterranean vegetation thrives and abounds.

Thus, the idea of organizing two routes gradually matured:

OLIVE TREE TRAIL (17KM) and RAIN TRAIL (37KM)

Corfu has the advantage of not having extreme temperature conditions or snowfall, an advantage that is favorable for conducting mountain races, allowing Corfu in the heart of winter to manage to attract runners from the rest of the country.

The marking of the Corfu Mountain Trail routes, starting and ending in the coastal village of Benitses, was intended to connect traditional villages and settlements (Benitses – Gastouri – Agioi Deka – Ano Garouna – Stavros).

When Vasilis Alamanos presented his idea in October 2011, the first organizational core was formed, from which the “ever-runner” ultra-distance runner Giorgos Psailas with his long experience in organizational matters could not be missing, while the contribution of fellow athletes Haris Vasilakis and Dafni Kosma in opening the trails was significant.

At the same time, efforts began, until the eve of the Corfu Mountain Trail, which consisted of familiarizing and acclimatizing Corfiot athletes with the routes on the trails of the Corfu Mountain Trail.

On an almost daily basis, groups were formed that went up the mountain, either running the entire routes or part of them. Many were our fellow citizens who enjoyed walking the 17km route (OLIVE TREE TRAIL).. As is the case with every event, the Corfu Mountain Trail aims to grow, on the one hand with the ever-increasing participation of athletes and on the other hand with the effort to have participation counted (points awarded) as a criterion for participation in other larger and more demanding mountain races of national or international scope.

A 5 km trail has also been marked for walkers, aiming to give an incentive to as many athletes as possible to enjoy walking through the Corfiot winter nature and to get to know the historicity of the landscapes.
