The beach is named after the beautiful stone monastery of the same name, Panagia Myrtiotissa, which is located a stone’s throw from the beach. In mythology, Myrtiotissa is baptized as “daughter of Poseidon”, the fruit of his love with the Nereid Amphitrite, as the landscape is so magical that it seems to have sprung from a fairy tale.
Significantly isolated, in an almost inaccessible part of the west coast, it is seemingly hiding below the high cliffs and the lush vegetation. Options to reach it are by way of the steep, downhill, pine needle covered paths or alternatively by sea; by means of boats, scoops or canoes.
It is well known that this is one of the most popular nudist beaches in Greece and Europe.
For this reason it is not recommended for all visitors, especially during the summer, as since the 70’s and to date, it hosts mainly nudists. Skinny dippers, without belonging to any nudist movement, come to this beautiful beach to soak up the sun and swim in the crystalline water.
The natural isolation of the beach, due to the morphology of the environment, keeps the nudists segregated. The beach is naturally divided into three parts by small rocks. The central section is utilized by those who don’t wish to bathe naked, while the other two are mainly nudist areas. However, one should be prepared for sights of some ‘birthday suits’ should they wish to visit this beautiful beach.
